Pep Guardiola is having a tough time in his ninth season in charge of Man City. The injury crisis has caused a lot of problems for The Citizens. Of the 11 injured players, four are in the defense including Ruben Dias, John Stones, Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake.
All four players have been used as centre-backs when fit, with Josko Gvardiol, Kyle Walker and Rico Lewis all playing full-backs under Pep Guardiola.
With Man City having to compete in three competitions this season, the current squad is clearly not enough and is forcing them to look for more options in the transfer market.
Strengthening the defence is a priority for Man City. It is understood that manager Pep Guardiola is targeting Brentford centre-back Sepp van den Berg. The 22-year-old failed to get a regular place at Liverpool and was sold to Brentford for £20m last summer.
The Dutchman has started Brentford's last eight Premier League games, playing at left-back, right-back and centre-back. Man City actually approached Liverpool about Van den Berg last year but the Reds eventually agreed to sell him to Brentford.
Right-back Jeremie Frimpong is also on City's radar. The Dutchman spent nine years at City's academy from 2010 to 2019 before joining Celtic and then Leverkusen.
Jeremie Frimpong has contributed 14 goals and 12 assists in 47 games. The 23-year-old won the Bundesliga and German Cup with Leverkusen last season. Frimpong could well be a long-term replacement for Kyle Walker, who has been in decline this season and is now 34.
